The Science of communication

The Super Gadget project allows children to explore the fascinating world of Communicataion

In the Super Gadget project, students created a simple but intriguing telegraph device. Using materials like LEDs, a battery, and a piece of MDF, they built a gadget that relies on Morse code to send messages over a distance. This experience allows children to learn important  scientific concepts, that have been explored by many pioneers of science, in a practical and enjoyable context, encouraging them to explore the world around them with an inventive mindset. This reflects the mission of inspiring future inventors and innovators to think outside the box and apply their knowledge in innovative ways.

About Inspiring Inventors

Hady Lamarr

1914-2000

Was an austrian and american actress and inventor. After a brief early film career in Czechoslovakia, she met Louis B. Mayer, who offered her a film contract in Hollywood. Lamarr became a film star with her performance in the romantic drama Algiers (1938). At the beginning of World War II, along with George Antheil, Lamarr co-invented a radio guidance system for Allied torpedoes that used spread spectrum and frequency hopping technology to defeat the threat of radio jamming by the Axis powers. This approach, conceptualized as a “Secret Communication System,” was intended to provide secure, jam-resistant communication for weapon guidance by spreading the signal across multiple frequencies, a method now recognized as the foundation of spread spectrum technology

Concepts covered

Telegraph

  • Telegraph: A device that allows the transmission of information over a distance using a code.
Invented in the 19th century, it was a true pioneer in long-distance communication. Its utility was
extensive, ranging from transmitting real-time news to facilitating commercial and personal
    communications.

Morse Code

  • Morse Code:  Devised by Samuel Morse, morse code is a telegraphic system, transmitted or
received via a telegraph, usable in various languages. It’s made of dots, dashes, and spaces
representing letters, numbers, and punctuation marks and was used by governments and the
military. This system enables message transmission over a distance, via wire or radio, through
    short and long sounds.

Why This Project?

The Super Gadget project was created with three main objectives:

  1. Understanding the importance of concepts: Allow young inventors to understand basic concepts of communication, realizing how a simple mechanism they create can serve as a model of effective communication
  2. Explaining the relevance on nowadays: As tech becomes more wearable and portable, light-based messaging systems could become a backup method of communication when signals drop — for example, smartwatches with LED messaging between hikers or emergency responders. Morse code is also being explored for accessibility tech, including assistive tools for people with limited mobility.
  3. Focus in Creativity and an Inventive Spirit: By taking part in this  process, children develop skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking, and motor coordination.

At the end of the session, in addition to building an Super Gadget, the young inventors inventors will also gain a new appreciation for the world of communication, and how this continues to inspire new technologies.

Together, let’s send messages to the future

Challenges for you

Ask your young inventor what excited them the most about the session, or challenge them to use the Super Gadget at home, with the family!

For the boldest ones, why not share your experience with us, so we can share it on our social media?
