Let the frog do its job

The Frog Filipe project allows young inventors to explore the fascinating world of physics

Through this experience, young inventors build a jumping frog model, using scientific principles like levitation and gravity.

All of this takes place in a stimulating environment where children’s inventive and creative spirit is nurtured, promoting teamwork, spontaneity, and curiosity

Concepts covered

Levitation and Gravity

  • Levitation: The phenomenon of an object floating in the air without visible support, defying gravity through a balance of forces.

  • Gravity: The force that pulls objects towards the centre of the Earth – like a “hug” that keeps us grounded

Newton’s Third Law

  • Newton’s Third Law: Explains that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. In the case of Frog Filipe, it’s this principle that enables the jumps, through the interaction between the elastic force and gravity.

Why This Project?

The Frog Filipe project was created with three main objectives:

  1. Exploring physics concepts: The young inventors assemble the frog using MDF pieces and elastic bands, customising it to their liking. When the frog is pressed down and released, it jumps — mimicking the long leaps of real frogs —! During the process, they explore concepts such as gravity, levitation, and Newton’s Third Law.”
  2. Encouraging problem-solving: This experience also allows young inventors to spark  problem-solving in a real and meaningful context. It prepares young minds to become future engineers and scientists, equipping them with essential knowledge and skills in a world that requires creative solutions to complex challenges.
  3. Understaing the impact of these concepts in society: During this experience, the young inventors come to understand that the exploration of gravity and reaction forces through Newton’s Third Law has enabled the development of countless technologies and a deeper understanding of how objects move. These concepts are fundamental in physics and underpin inventions ranging from simple toys to complex machines and vehicles that operate both on Earth and in space.

At the end of the sessions, children will also gain a newfound appreciation for the world of physics, celebrating their success by playing Frog Filipe!

Together, let’s make curiosity levitate!

Challenges for you

Ask your young inventor what excited them most about the session, or challenge them to use the Frog Filipe at home with the family!

For the boldest ones, why not share your experience with us, so we can share it on our social media?
