Learning is a fun movie

The Stop Motion project allows children to explore the fascinating world of cinema creating their own vídeos

With the Stop Motion, the young inventors make fun and creative films.

Through this experience, children learn about sequential capturing of photographs of inanimate objects that are slightly moved between each shot to simulate movement.

All of this takes place in a stimulating environment, where children’s inventive and creative spirit is highlighted, encouraging teamwork and spontaneity to creat their own movies.

About InspiringInventors

Willis O´Brien

Willis O´Brien

1886–1962

He was a pioneering American stop-motion animator and special effects artist, best known for his groundbreaking work on King Kong (1933). His innovative use of stop-motion animation brought creatures to life in a way that had never been seen before, laying the foundation for future visual effects in cinema. O’Brien’s work was revolutionary for its time, blending stop-motion with live-action footage and inspiring generations of animators, including Harryhausen, who carried on his legacy in films like Jason and the Argonauts (1963) and Clash of the Titans (1981). His influence can still be seen in modern CGI-based creature effects today.

Concepts Covered

Stop Motion

Stop Motion: Is an animation technique that uses the sequential arrangement of different photographs of inanimate objects whose position has been slightly altered to simulate movement. The photographs are taken from the same angle, and due to persistence of vision, we have the illusion that the objects are moving

Selective vision and photography and frame

Selective vision: Children learn that when we see, our eyes select what is most important from the environment and what is not—they are selective, focusing only on what catches their attention. A photographic camera, on the other hand, does not have selective vision; it captures everything, both what interests us and what does not. This highlights the importance of learning how to frame a shot properly .

Photography and frame: The young inventors also learn, that photography is the art of manipulating light with the aim of capturing an image on either paper or digital media. Analogue photography is created using chemical processes, whereas digital photography relies on processors and image sensors. A frame is a single image (a “photograph”) within a film

Why This Project?

The Stop Motion project was created with three main objectives:

1.Inspire creativity: Through this project, young inventors are encouraged to think out of the box, developing their own stories and characters .
2.The Importance of the Stop Motion Technique: This project provides an opportunity for children to understand that the stop-motion technique revolutionised the film industry, enabling the creation of impressive visual effects before computer graphics.
3.Encouraging Creativity and an Inventive Spirit: By taking part in this process, children develop skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking, and motor coordination. The ability to personalise their own film with the Stop Motion makes the experience even more special.

At the end of the sessions, children will gain a new appreciation for the world of cinema and imagery, celebrating their success through the videos they create, which will be sent home, allowing for family movie nights.

Together, we discover how the Stop Motion can create masterpieces of cinema !
