The creativity of a toy

The Spirograph project allows children to explore the fascinating world of geometry in a fun and hands-on way

With the Spirograph, we make Geometry fun. There’s no need to know how to draw to create exceptional designs filled with colourful patterns. In the end, we can even add a special touch and colour them as we like!

Through this experience, children have the opportunity to explore mathematical concepts related to patterns and gears.

All of this takes place in a stimulating environment, where children’s inventive and creative spirit is highlighted, encouraging teamwork and spontaneity to personalise each design, making it uniquely their own.

About InspiringInventors

Denys Fisher

Denys Fisher

1918-2002

He was an English engineer and the inventor of the famous Spirograph, a toy launched in the 1960s. Originally created as a mechanical design tool, the Spirograph became a global phenomenon among children and adults, winning awards and gaining worldwide popularity. Fisher founded Denys Fisher Toys, a company responsible for launching several innovative toys. The Spirograph is still sold today. His legacy remains at the intersection of creativity, science, and fun.

Concepts Covered

Geometry

In the Spirograph experience, children are introduced to the world of geometry, one of the branches of mathematics:

Geometry: A branch of mathematics that explores shapes, measurements, and the positions of figures, particularly mathematical curves such as hypotrochoids and epitrochoids generated by the Spirograph.

While learning to use the Spirograph, children develop manual skills, creating incredible designs filled with patterns, which they can colour to add their personal touch.

Pattern and gears

This project also introduces children to the concepts of patterns and gears:

Pattern: Children learn that a pattern is a design in which elements repeat in a regular way. They also discover that, beyond the drawings made with the Spirograph, patterns can be found in tiles, fabrics, and various forms of art.

Gears: Through this experience, children understand the mechanics of gears, which are found in mechanisms such as bicycle gears or a clock.

Why This Project?

The Spirograph project was created with three main objectives:

Exploring the Fun Side of Mathematics

Through this project, children will learn mathematical concepts such as geometry, which studies the shape, size, and position of figures or objects in a plane or space. The patterns created with the Spirograph are geometric designs representing mathematical curves, making this subject fun and full of creativity.

The Importance of Gears

This project provides an opportunity for children to recognise the presence of gears in everyday objects such as bicycles and clocks.

Encouraging Creativity and an Inventive Spirit

By taking part in this process, children develop skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking, and motor coordination. The ability to personalise the designs created with the Spirograph makes the experience even more special.

At the end of the sessions, alongside their completed drawings, children will gain a new appreciation for the world of geometry, while celebrating their success through their creations.

Together, we discover how the Spirograph can create magic!

Challenges for you

Ask your young inventor what excited them most in class or challenge them to use the Spirograph at home. Turn this moment into a true family art workshop!

For the boldest creators, why not record your designs and share them with us on social media? We’d love to see your artwork and highlight the most creative and inspiring pieces!
