The logic of monsters

The Monster Factory project allows young inventors to explore the fascinating world of flowcharts in a fun and hands-on way

With this project, creativity goes hand in hand with logical thinking. As they build the Monster Factory, young inventors learn how to document processes!

Through this experience, children have the opportunity to create a spooky monster and record everything in a flowchart, so that another team can later rebuild it using only those instructions.

All of this takes place in an inspiring environment, where the inventive and creative spirit of young inventors is celebrated, encouraging teamwork, spontaneity, and curiosity.

AboutInspiring Inventors

Frank Gilbreth

Frank Gilbreth

1629-1695

He was an American engineer, consultant, and author, known as one of the early advocates of scientific management and a pioneer in time and motion studies. Both he and his wife, Lillian Moller Gilbreth, were industrial engineers and efficiency experts who contributed significantly to the field of industrial engineering, particularly in areas such as motion study and human factors.Frank Gilbreth was the creator of the first process chart, around 1921 – a kind of “grandfather” of the modern flowchart. He developed it as part of his work in motion study, aimed at understanding and improving both industrial and domestic processes.

Concepts Covered

Flowcharts

  • Flowcharts: It is the graphical representation of the sequence of steps in a process. It is a tool that allows the process to be documented in a way that makes its functioning easy to understand at a glance (for example, in a factory process, it helps to identify the best and fastest approach to assembling an object).

Algorithms

  • Algorithms: An algorithm is a finite sequence of executable actions aimed at finding a solution to a specific type of problem.

Why this project?

Monster Factory project was created with three main objectives:

  1. Exploring the world of flowcharts : In this project, young inventors will create spooky monsters. They’ll use colourful modelling clay to build their monster as quickly and frighteningly as possible. Afterwards, they’ll describe the process in a flowchart and test whether another team can successfully reconstruct it using only those instructions — helping them understand the importance of a well-structured process.
  2. Understanding the future linked to these concepts: Through this experience, young inventors come to understand that the concepts behind the Monster Factory — flowcharts and algorithms — are fundamental in nearly every area of modern life, from assembling industrial products to developing software!
  3. Encouraging Creativity and an Inventive Spirit : By participating in this process, young inventors develop essential skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking, and motor coordination.

By the end of the project, young inventors will have gained a deeper understanding of flowcharts, celebrating their success through the creation of their own monsters and their ability to interpret other teams’ processes. This experience proves that a well-organised creative process is frighteningly more effective!

Together, let’s scare off disorganisation!

Challenges for you

Ask your young inventor what excited them most about the lesson, or try creating a challenge at home that puts a well-structured process to the test. Turn this into a fun moment for the whole family!

For the bravest inventors, show us your experiments – we’d love to share your challenges on social media. Make this project a frightfully fun adventure for everyone!
