Card dealing in mathematics

The CardMania project allows children to explore the fascinating world of mathematics and probability in a fun and hands-on way!

CardMania is a project that invites young inventors to create and play a personalised card game, where they seek to develop the best strategies to use.

The experience sparks children’s curiosity and creativity in the world of mathematics, probability, and strategy. It enables them to learn, in a practical and enjoyable way, mathematical concepts explored by many pioneers of science, encouraging them to engage with the world around them with an inventive mindset.

This reflects the mission to inspire future inventors to think “outside the box” and to apply their knowledge in creative and innovative ways.

AboutInspiring Inventors

Émilie du Châtelet

Émilie du Châtelet

1706-1749

She was a french author who played a prominent role as a scientist in the fields of physics and mathematics. In 1749, Châtelet completed a work regarded as the pinnacle of her scientific achievements: the French translation, with her own commentary, of Newton’s celebrated Principia Mathematica, including her formulation of the concept of energy conservation, which she derived from the principles of mechanics contained in the work she translated. She also studied the theory of probability, influenced by Pascal, and formulated several theses on rational strategy and the laws of chance!

Concepts Covered

Mathematics and probability

  • Mathematics: A field of knowledge that includes the study of numbers, formulas and related structures, shapes and the spaces they occupy, as well as quantities and their changes.
  • Probability: The mathematical study that seeks to quantify the likelihood of random events occurring.

Strategy and Logic

  • Strategy: A general plan for achieving one or more overall or long-term goals under conditions of uncertainty.
  • Logic: The study of the use of reasoning in any activity, and a normative, philosophical examination of valid reasoning.

Why this project?

The CardMania project was created with three main objectives:

Understanding the importance of concepts: In this project, young inventors discover the relevance of probability, logic, and strategy in decision-making processes.

Explaining mathematics in a fun way: With CardMania, children explore mathematical concepts in a creative and enjoyable context.

Focusing on creativity and inventive spirit: By taking part in this process, young inventors develop skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking, and motor coordination. In the end, playing CartaMania makes the experience even more special.

By the end of the session, children gain a new appreciation for the world of probability, strategy, and logic — and understand how these concepts influence society across various fields linked to innovation!

Together, we discover that science is, quite possibly, a card game full of logic!
