Infrared makes noise

The IR Bepper project allows you to gain an understanding of infrared and electrical circuits

This project invites young inventors to create a device called the IR Bepper, based on several electronic concepts!

The IR Beeper experiment is an activity designed to teach young inventors about infrared technology by building a simple electrical circuit. During the experiment, students will assemble a device that emits sounds (a beeper) when it detects infrared radiation, simulating the basic operation of a television remote control.

This reflects the mission of inspiring future inventors to think “outside the box” and to apply their knowledge in creative and innovative ways.

About Inspiring Inventors

William Herschel

William Herschel

1738-1822

He was a German-British astronomer and composer. He often collaborated with his younger sister, Caroline Herschel, who was also an astronomer. Born in the Electorate of Hanover, he followed his father into the Hanoverian military band before emigrating to Great Britain in 1757, at the age of 19. Herschel was a pioneer in the use of astronomical spectrophotometry, using prisms and temperature-measuring instruments to analyse the distribution of wavelengths in stellar spectra. In the course of these investigations, Herschel discovered infrared radiation.

Concepts covered

Infrared

  • Infrared: A type of radiation with a longer wavelength than visible light, used for communication between electronic devices.

Electric circuits/ Sensors and Aactuators

  • Electrical Circuits: Introduction to the basic assembly of electrical circuits using breadboards, LEDs and buzzers.
  • Sensors and Actuators: Pupils learn about sensors, which detect changes in the environment, and actuators, which perform actions in response to those changes.

Why This Project?

The IR Bepper project was created with three main goals:

Understanding the importance of concepts: In this project, young inventors gain an understanding of how useful electronics concepts can be!

Understanding the impact on society: With the IR Bepper, young inventors learn about the usefulness of inventions based on infrared technology, which open the door to future applications such as proximity sensors, security systems and smart automation. In addition, wireless communication technologies continue to evolve and are essential for IoT (Internet of Things) devices.

Focusing on creativity and an inventive mindset: By taking part in this process, young inventors develop skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking and motor coordination. In the end, playing with the IR Bepper makes this experience even more special.

By the end of the session, young inventors gain a new appreciation for the world of electronics.

Together, we discover how electronics give sound to curiosity!

Challenges for you

Ask your young inventor what excited them most in class — or try out the IR Bepper together as a family!

For the boldest ones, how about sharing the impact of those decisions with us on social media?
